With the ornaments of holidaying fully stripped, January was like getting shot out of a cannon. The bitter cold and predominantly gray days persisted as they do in Vermont with a stubborn refusal to admit defeat. This is what January does: wear things to the bone.

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie.

It’s an old saying; something about not stirring up old troubles or leaving the past where it is. But when you’ve got a 13-year-old deaf black lab with dementia finally asleep after a long bout of incessant barking, the meaning is quite literal. This was the moment that finally got the Canon 60D out of the closet after years of gathering dust, and it felt like far too long: adjusting a tripod, swapping lenses, fumbling through manual mode… remembering all the things that can go into snapping a photograph.
